Dusty has been missing from Austin Street in Somerville--last seen at the end of August. Dusty is Semi-Feral.

--Bright yellow eyes. White stripe down bridge of nose. Black nose, tan chin with black splotches. Black toe-pads on feet. White chest and belly. Black and tan patches on back. Tan “elbow patches” on front and back legs. Tip of tail is black.
--Dusty is spayed, No collar, not chipped.
--Skittish of most people--Dusty is Semi-Feral.

Dusty ran Away From Home on: 07/15/06. She was last Seen: 08/31/06 on Austin Street, East Somerville in between houses 5,6 and 8

Dusty has a habit of running away whenever a door or window is open for too long. Normally she stays close to home and we always see her around the neighborhood---(from Sullivan Square to Stop & Shop) but we haven’t seen her in the neighborhood at all with the exception of that afternoon on 8/31/06. We are worried that she left the neighborhood or has been adopted by another family.

LOST CAT: Trouble (Cambridge/Somerville Line)

Thank you to all the members who assisted in looking for Trouble. Sadly, she was found in a nearby neighbor's yard. She looked like she was asleep under a bush, but she had in fact passed away. Her family is grateful for all the support you have shown during Trouble's disappearance.

Georgie is back at home safe and sound with Tom! What an adventure!

Georgie jumped out of his owner's 3rd floor window and ran off. His owner, Tom, was in the process of moving on June 29 and Georgie was spooked by the moving guys (after already being stressed).

Tom adopted Georgie a year and a half ago from a feral litter, so he is partially socialized but he is not the type of cat who will come too close to people. Tom has set a trap near his old apartment with the hopes that Georgie will come back there.

LOST CAT "Kippy" or "Good Boy" from Ball Square Area FOUND on SUN. Dec. 11!

Kippy is an indoor only cat who has never been outside. He escaped from Lisa and Jen's house at 221 Willow Avenue, a few blocks from Ball Square, on the evening of Tuesday, Dec. 6th.

Aspen is from Rhode Island and had only been in the area 3 days when she got outside. She is an indoor cat with a medical condition.

Alleycat AdvoCats 2nd Annual Yard/Book Sale Raises $1600 for TNR

We are excited to report that the Alleycat AdvoCats 2nd Annual Yard/Book Sale was a huge success, raising $1600 for our TNR work! Heather Lynch and Matt Eisaman organized the logistics, while Bridget Page and Steve Ashley hosted the event. A special thanks goes out to Jackie Rickard, Susan Piaggio O'Keefe, Lorene Melvin, Cynthia Rose, Lisa Moellman and Deborah Muscella for working the Yard Sale and assisting with clean-up. We are ever so appreciative, as well, to Amy Caton-Reuss, who donated handmade kitty pillowcases for our special event! Alleycat AdvoCats would also like to thank Frank Cresta and the folks at Somerville Dog for donating some of their items to the "Cat People!" So many residents and supporters kindly dropped off books and goods for the sale, it was wonderful to experience the generosity of fellow animal lovers. Thank you all for making this year's sale such a great success!

Alley Cat Allies and The Humane Society of the United States Accepting Donations for Animals Affected by Hurricaine Katrina

Alley Cat Allies, a widely acclaimed national feral cat organization, has received an overwhelming number of requests for help with the animals still remaining in the disaster area - primarily in New Orleans. They are immediately passing this information on to rescue groups on the ground, who are doing all they can to save the animals.

They have also received an outpouring of support - both in offers of help and direct donations from compassionate people. All the proceeds of the Compassion Fund will go directly to save animals.

How can you help Alleycat AdvoCats make this year's yard sale even better than last year's?

1. Donate items to be sold!

Last year, the best sellers were: clothes & shoes, books, small working electronic items (cameras, radios etc.), computer equipment (keyboards etc.), household items (dishes, tupperwareetc.), and antiques. We also had people asking for old LPs, even though we had none to sell. So dig out those old disco LPs!

If possible, please bring your items directly to the yard sale on Sept. 3rd by 7am. But...if you absolutely cannot do this, you can drop items off at Heather's house (see address below) anytime during the following open drop-off times:

--Wednesday, August 31, 7:00 pm-9:00 pm
--Friday, September 2, 7:00 pm-9:00 pm.

Please, no furniture or super bulky items to be dropped off at Heather's house - She can't transport very large items.

We need to fill 4 hour shifts throughout the weekend, as well as set-up and clean-up shifts from 5:00 am-7:00 am and 4:00 pm-6:00 pm. each day.

3. Help advertise the event!
We need everyone to help print out and put up fliers for the event. Next week, Heather will send out the new flier so stay tuned! Everyone in Somerville should know about the Alleycat AdvoCats Yard Sale! Please spread the word to all your friends and neighbors. Word of mouth is very veryeffective.

Happy news! Blue was found by his owner, Allision--he apparently showed up in West Roxbury and was at the shelter in Dedham. Allison found him up for adoption on PetFinder. Alleycat AdvoCats Partners with Everett PetSmart

We are please to announce that Alleycat AdvoCats now adopts out kittens and friendly adult cats through PetSmart in Everett. Jenny Ohgi has been instrumental in establishing this partnership and in recruiting new volunteers who can help facilitate these adoptions. When we began Alleycat AdvoCats in 2003, we didn’t expect kitten adoptions to be a large part of our Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) efforts in Somerville. Within the first year, however, we realized that there were almost as many kittens needing foster care and stable homes as there were adult ferals requiring TNR. In the 22 months that Alleycat AdvoCats has been operating, we have taken over 100 kittens off the streets of Somerville—this has been above and beyond our TNR work with adult ferals in colonies throughout the city.

Andy and Leslie’s Story: Oakland Avenue

We contacted Alleycat Advocats in June after noticing that our two favorite ferals, The Olsen Twins, had kittens under our neighbor's porch. Until we saw the kittens, we had been content to feed and do nothing else. Before our connection with Alleycat AdvoCats, we had not really paid attention to the ferals, except the Twins. When we started feeding with an eye toward Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR), however, we learned so much about how a colony works and how caring these animals really are. The Twins both nursed the smaller kittens, Shakes and Handfoot. An adolescent feral in the colony, Zoe, cared for a previously weaned kitten, Commander Fluffypants, frequently walking him across the street and hiding him in a neighbor's yard.

Kit Lilly, a trapper from Charles River Feline Rescue who frequently works with Alleycat AdvoCats, taught us how to trap, gave us the equipment we needed, and hooked us up with Dr. Olga Iglikova from Revere Pet Clinic. Thanks to Kit, out of the nine ferals in this colony, we have now trapped six and altered five: Ashley Olsen (we had to decide which one was which), Zoe, The Dingo, Commander Fluffypants, and Handfoot. Shakes was still too little, but will be altered soon. We're still stalking Mary Kate and the males (Batman, a handsome, masked tuxedo kitty, and Magnus, an older-loooking orange tom). Meanwhile, with the kittens, Jenny Ohgi, Alleycat AdvoCats’ Foster Care Manager, helped us with the littlest ones, who had a form of palsy. We fostered them for about a month, and have since transferred them to Nancy Brooks, who takes terrific care of them. Meera Tholander, the Adoptions Coordinator then helped us to adopt Commander Fluffypants, who is turning out to be the most amazing little cat. He’s so gentle, he doesn't use his claws with us, even when he's wrestling!

Working with everyone at Alleycat AdvoCats, and with the ferals, has given our whole family the chance to see just how connected cats are to humans. These cats are where they are because humans failed them along the way, but, on some level, they still want to be near people, even if they don't quite trust us. In our efforts to help these cats, we've met some extraordinary women who have assisted us every step of the way. Even my four-year-old son has learned how to love someone very much (Handfoot) and then let her go. And, through this adventure, we've met our neighbors! After living here six years, we now know the people on our block…and have since discovered that most of them love the cats!

--$50 to build an insulate shelter and feeding station for winter
--$60 to spay/neuter, vaccinate and eartip a feral cat
--$100 per kitten for a vet visit and spay/neuter
Alleycat AdvoCats is 100% volunteer run 501(c)3 non-profit organization. We charge out no overhead costs. A tax receipt will be provided for all donations over $20.00.

Alleycat AdvoCats sells used books as a core fundraising strategy. We accept donations of non-fiction books, recent textbooks, and out-of-print books in excellent condition (we do not take donations of mass market paperbacks, trade paperbacks, books in 'dog-eared' or poor condition or books smelling of smoke/mold/mildew/musty basement, showing evidence of water damage). Massachusetts Animal Coalition Grants Alleycat AdvoCats $3300 for TNR Projects in Somerville this Summer

In May, the Massachusetts Animal Coalition (MAC) granted Alleycat AdvoCats funds to TNR 70+ cats in Somerville this summer. The TNR projects will focus primarily on Winter Hill colonies, and will enlist local neighborhood residents, Charles River Feline Rescue and Alleycat AdvoCats volunteers, as well as veterinarians from Winter Hill Veterinary Clinic and Revere Pet Clinic. We are thankful for MAC support while we continue to encourage the City of Somerville to become a vital partner in our collaborative effort to TNR Somerville's burgeoning feral cat population.
